Star Profile Lee Mashburn sells integrated services

Take a look at what’s happening on the Harley Haven site on Fernandina Road, next to I–26. It’s under way, and it’s being built by Mashburn Construction.

Lee Mashburn, director of business development for Mashburn Construction, scored the deal with Harley Haven as a design–build project, which is gaining acceptance nationwide. The US Army Corps of Engineers manages about half its work as design–build, something more recently known in construction circles as integrated services.

At the outset of the Harley Haven integrated services project, Mashburn construction met with the people at Harley Haven and heard the full list of wants and needs. Then Mashburn and architect Scott Garvin collaborated skills and talent and designed the building. Mashburn acted as the team cost estimator, not approving anything in the design or the construction documents not allowed by the wants–and–needs list or by the budget’s bottom line.

The process was recently proven and perfected with the new Jim Hudson Toyota complex on Columbiana Drive. The architect for the Toyota project was Derek Gruner of JHS.

Both Harley Haven and Jim Hudson Toyota reflect what Mashburn is selling: fine finishes in every sense.

In other words, the buildings must finish under budget and under deadline, and the buildings must have surface finishes fine enough to sell high–end motorcycles and automobiles.

Founded in 1976, Mashburn Construction is headquartered downtown on Sumter Street, and they have a large office presence in Myrtle Beach and Charleston. Their annual volume of business among the three offices exceeds $60 million. Even with such volume, Mashburn’s jobsite safety record ranks among the top 8% nationally.

Lee Mashburn recently accepted an invitation by the Center City Partnership to join its board, which is fitting for a firm with a $1.5 million headquarters home inside the partnership’s boundaries. He says his timing is lucky in that downtown turned the corner last year with the opening of the Publix on Huger Street and the Meridian on Main Street. All the activity of the past five years has been positive, Mashburn observed, and now his responsibility is to give direction and to maintain momentum.

A USC graduate in civil engineering, Mashburn lives near downtown in Heathwood with his wife and two children. Prior to assuming duties as director of business development, he worked in both the estimating and production departments at Mashburn Construction.

Indicative of Lee Mashburn’s efforts, the construction company recently pulled in the following projects:

Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc.

A $7 million addition/expansion to corporate offices in Myrtle Beach. Architect: LS3P Associates.

Clarendon Memorial Hospital

Located in Manning, the hospital is undergoing a 12,300 square–foot renovation and is adding 3,400 new square feet, all for $2 million.

Architect: LS3P Associates.

Irmo Medical Center

A 60,000 square–foot medical office building in Irmo, the building is budgeted for $3.1 million. Architect: JHS.

Chapin Baptist Church

An education facility of 38,000 square feet, the $3 million building will house the youth, pre–school, and elementary grades.

Architect: McAbee.

Saturn of Columbia

Mashburn constructed the original buildings for Saturn of Columbia on Jamil Road. This addition will cost $1.1 million.

Architect: LTC Associates.

Also, on May 9, Mashburn participated in the brick breaking ceremony to begin construction of the mixed–use building at 1520 Main Street, as designed by J. Lesesne Monteith AIA and developed by Tom Prioreschi.

In Greenville, November 2002, the SC Chamber of Commerce and the accounting firm Elliott Davis honored Mashburn Construction as one of SC’s fastest growing companies. As Governor Jim Hodges said in the ceremony, “Your hard work, integrity, and commitment to excellence provide an opportunity to serve as shining examples of success and achievement.”
