Quirky Crimes in the Capital City

Richland County

Two Notch Road: A man was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after he tried to steal $46 worth of steaks from a grocery store. The loss prevention officer spotted the man stuffing T-bone steaks in his pants and followed him to see if he was going to pay for them. When the man walked past the check-out without rendering payment, the loss prevention officer stopped him, took him to the office, and called police. By the time officers arrived, the 52-year-old man had admitted to the theft and the steaks were recovered. He was charged with shoplifting and taken to jail.

Two Notch Road: The owner of a seafood business called police at 9 p.m. Tuesday after she said someone had stolen her $600 commercial trash can. The owner told officers there have been several incidents in the past two weeks where burglaries or thefts were attempted. She said she had caught the thief on her security cameras and when the police watched the video, a man was loitering in front of the business for a while during the day. That night, the same man was shown on camera pushing the trash bin down the street. The officers now know what the accused thief looks like and are pursuing the case. The business owner said if they find him, she wants to prosecute.
