  • The children at the SC School for the Deaf and Blind love horses, and they may soon have a brand new horsebackriding facility right on their Spartanburg campus.

Almost everything is in place for a new therapeutic equestrian facility that will benefit both SCSDB students and disabled individuals throughout the Spartanburg area. Twenty–one acres, volunteers, and state approval are in place. The only remaining need is funding, approximately $750,000 that would be used to build the facility and ensure quality staffing and maintenance in future years.

The volunteers from H.A.L.T.E.R. (Handicapped Athletes Learning to Enjoy Riding) program hope they can build the community support to raise this challenging amount in the next three years.

H.A.L.T.E.R. is a non–profit organization with an all–volunteer board of directors established in 1987 to provide therapeutic riding for the SCSDB students at a facility located four miles from campus.

H.A.L.T.E.R. plans to lease 21 acres of the SCSDB campus for a minimal amount per year in return for providing pastures, corrals, a barn, horses, and equipment and staffing.
