The Greater Columbia Literacy Council’s recent awards ceremony was also a festive cookout to honor readers and their teachers and to pay tribute to milestones achieved by participants.

Industrial leader Bruce Donatelli and former council board chair received a lifetime membership for ten years’ consecutive service to the literacy council.

Two English as Second Language (ESL) awards, named in memory of longtime council supporter, Dr. John Scott Wilson, who taught history at USC for many years, were given.

Teacher Stewart Lindsey and student Pork Sayarath received an award for their work together. Teacher Peggy Mitchell and students Larisa Aginskaya and Khaim Tyagay, were also honored. The student couple received their US citizenship this year.

In the category of basic literacy, the Frank Helland Award, also named for a staunch program supporter, was given to teacher Myra Shacon and student Brenda Berry.
