Fort Jackson welcomes Col. Hickman as new Garrison Commander

Fort Jackson hosted a change of command ceremony at Victory Field, June 15 to welcome Col. Timothy Hickman as its new garrison commander.

Hickman will assume command from Col. Ryan M. Hanson, who is leaving Fort Jackson to work at Southern Command in Doral, Florida.

Col. Timothy Hickman commissioned in 2000 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Texas at San Antonio and was branched detailed to the Air Defense Artillery before becoming an Adjutant General Corps officer.

Hickman began his military career as a platoon deader in 5-52 Air Defense Artillery Battalion (PATRIOT) at Fort Bliss, Texas and deployed with Echo Battery during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. After the deployment, he served as the executive officer and then as the battalion adjutant of the same battalion. After completing his branch detail, Hickman attended the Adjutant General Corps Captain’s Career Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 2004.

He served as the battalion adjutant general for Atlanta Recruiting Battalion from 2004-2006 and then was the assistant operations officer at the Military Entrance and Processing Station in Beckley, West Virginia from 2006-2008. From 2008-2011, Hickman was stationed in Korea where he served as the strength manager of the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command and then as the brigade adjutant general for the 501st Sustainment Brigade. In 2012, Col. Hickman attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas with a follow-on assignment as a strategic plans officer at Joint Task Force North at Fort Bliss, Texas from 2012-2014.

In 2014, he served as the deputy adjutant general and Task Force Marne adjutant general for the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia, until he deployed as the deputy adjutant general for U.S. Forces Afghanistan in 2015. He then served as the Chief of the Integrated Personnel & Pay System (IPPS-A) Fusion Cell at the Soldier Support Institute, Fort Jackson, South Carolina from 2016-2018.

Hickman commanded the Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army North (U.S. Fifth Army), at Fort Sam Houston, Texas from 2018-2020. He then returned to Fort Jackson as the Adjutant General Proponent Director at the Adjutant General School, for a year until he attended the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania from 2021-2022.

Col. Hickman then served as the Director of the Training and Doctrine Proponent Office for Human Resources at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He was selected to take command of the Garrison at Fort Jackson, South Carolina summer of 2023.

Col. Hickman has masters’ degrees from the U.S. Army War College and from West Virginia University. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His military decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Achievement Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal. He has campaign medals from the Global War on Terror for Iraq and Afghanistan, service medals for Korean and NATO tours, and the Combat Action Badge.

Col. Hickman is married and has four children.
