A.C. Flora High School senior Terriana Gray has been named the 2024 Richland County High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year by the Richland County Recreation Commission.
Terriana was selected by a panel of voters from Columbia media outlets along with 14 head girls basketball coaches from high schools across Richland County. She was announced as the winner during a ceremony at Seawell’s Wednesday, March 27.
“I feel good. I worked for this award. It shows the type of player I am for them to give me that,” Gray said.
Even though A.C. Flora’s girls basketball team lost to Riverside High School in the Class AAAA state championship finals, head coach Jacob Thompson says Gray played a key role in helping her team make it as far as they did.
“Terriana leads by example. There’s no complaining when we’re asking the players to do a drill. When it’s time to put in a game plan to get ready, she’s always there giving her input because she’s watched them or she remembers what the team did from previous times. Terriana’s leadership is silent until game time,” said Thompson. “ When it’s game time, she’s more intense and vocal. That goes to her because she hates losing. Her character and leadership when it comes to that bleeds over to the younger girls on the team and the other seniors. They don’t want to feel like they’ve let their other teammates down.”
As part of the award, Gray received a $2,000 scholarship or education bundle (or college educational bundle, including an iPad and gift cards. She plans to play collegiate basketball, but she is still deciding where she wants to play.
