The Gray Collegiate War Eagles travelled to Latta Monday, May 23, and came away with a 7-0 victory over the Vikings to take a 1-0 lead in the best–of–three Class 2A Softball State Championship series.
Brooke Tranum led the way for Gray going 3-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Madison Knapper added three RBI on a 1-for-3 night, and Maddox Long went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Taylor Corley got the win from the mound pitching a complete-game shutout while scattering four hits and striking out six.
Jayla Jackson paced the Vikings going 2-for-3 from the plate.
The War Eagles took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Corley reached on an error, and Tranum singled to centerfield. Aubrey Broadway, pinch running for Corley, eventually scored on an error, and Tranum came home on Long’s single to centerfield. Kaley Anderson then singled to right field, and Na’Veah Matthews walked to load the bases. Knapper then reached on an infield single scoring Long. The throw went astray allowing pinch runner Alyssa Bukszar and Matthews home.
Gray added another run in the top of the second when Brooklinn Thomas singled to right and later scored on Tranum’s double to centerfield.
The War Eagles got their final run in the top of the fourth when Thomas walked and later scored on Long’s fielder’s choice.
The two teams are scheduled to get together for Game 2 May 25.
