The Columbia Ball begins the debutante season


 

 

The first of the season’s debutante balls, The Columbia Ball, was held on Thanksgiving Eve, November 26, at the University of South Carolina’s Pastides Alumni Center.

Mr. James Edwin Miller II, president of The Columbia Ball, and Mrs. Miller, along with the debutante daughters and their mothers and grandmothers, received members and guests. The festivities began at 7 p.m. with the reception, followed by the presentation of the debutantes, the debutante figure, dinner, and dancing in the ballroom. The debutantes were introduced by Mr. James Edwin Miller II, and music was provided by The Ross Holmes Band and Men of Distinction.

Each debutante was presented with a hand-tied bouquet of roses in shades of white, blush, and pink, white hydrangea, antique carnation, and white limonium. The bouquets were wrapped with soft pink velvet ribbon. To represent their legacy in The Columbia Ball, blush satin ribbons were added to the daughters’ bouquets, an additional soft pink velvet was added to the granddaughters’ bouquets, and white lace was added to the bouquets of the great-granddaughters. Table arrangements of varying heights featured antique and white hydrangea, pink and white roses, white veronica, white spray carnations, pink and white stock, and a mixture of garden greenery.

Sons and grandsons invited to attend their first Ball were Mr. Thomas Rhett Ball, Mr. Andrew Mark Brown, Mr. Christopher Taylor Brown, Mr. William Addison Fritze, Mr. William Cravens Godbold, Robert Hayne Hodges IV, Mr. Tyler Banks Hudson, Jr., Mr. Sampson Pope Kennedy, Mr. John Lucius McCants, Jr., Mr. William Dickson Morris III, Mr. Thomas Arman Riley, Mr. Frank Elliott Robinson IV, and Mr. James Carter Weston III.

Seated at the President’s table with Mr. and Mrs. Miller were Mr. Tyler Banks Hudson, Chairman of the Ball, and Mrs. Hudson; Mr. Hill Freeman Belser, venue arrangements chairman, and Mrs. Belser; Mr. Henry Spann Laffitte, Jr., venue arrangements co-chairman, and Mrs. Laffitte; Mr. John Peyre Scurry, Jr., music chairman, and Mrs. Scurry; Mr. Earle Craig Waites, Jr., immediate past president, and Mrs. Waites; Mr. Robert Edward Kneece, Jr., former president, and Mrs. Kneece; Mr. William Mace Haselden, president of the Cotillion, and Mrs. Haselden.
