The Camellia Ball presents debutantes


 

 

The Camellia Ball held its 53rd annual ball Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Forest Lake Club. Seven debutante daughters, two granddaughters, and 21 guest debutantes were presented.

The Camellia Ball’s president, Mr. Mark McCutchen James, and Mrs. James received members and guests at a reception in the ballroom to music provided by harpist, Mrs. Clarke Chandler McNair, prior to the ball. Following the reception, Mr. James Lawrence Best presented the debutantes with introductions.

The debutante figure was led by Miss Katharine Anne Fawcett, followed by Miss Lela Lentz Cagle. Miss Katharine Anne Fawcett was presented by her father, Mr. Peter Gavin Fawcett. She is also granddaughter of Mrs. Donald Valentine Richardson III and the late Mr. Richardson, and was escorted by Mr. Donald Richardson Fawcett. Miss Lela Lentz Cagle was presented by her father, Mr. Patrick Martin Cagle, and escorted by Mr. Robert Allen Pope. Next to make their debuts were Miss Hannah Leadley Cureton, presented by her father, Mr. Frank William Cureton, and escorted by Mr. Caleb Joseph Burnett; Miss Anne Marie Chapman Giles, presented by her father, Mr. Alexander Faris Giles III, and escorted by Mr. Hamilton Gene Rhinehart; Miss Anne Brailsford Plowden, presented by her father, Mr. Russell Zimmerman Plowden, and escorted by Mr. Joseph Walker Comer; Miss Helen Turner Rogers, presented by her father, Mr. James Frederick Rogers, and escorted by Mr. William Andrew Komar; and Miss Sarah McIver Stormer presented by her father Mr. Christian Robert Stormer, and escorted by Mr. Thomas Maclin Barton.

 

 

The debutante granddaughters presented were Miss Renée Pauline Dougherty, presented by her grandfather, Mr. Harold Simmons Tate Jr., and escorted by Mr. John Thomas Billas Theodore; and Miss DeLacy Louise Pinckney Rowland, presented by her grandfather, Dr. Thomas Clifford Rowland Jr., and escorted by Mr. John Childers Lansing.

Each debutante carried a nosegay of debutante camellias, pink roses, white freesia, white stock, green trachelium, white wax flowers, and hydrangea adorned with pink satin ribbon and streamers.

Dinner and dancing in the ballroom followed the presentation of the debutantes. The Dick Goodwin Big Band provided music. Following dinner, coffee was served in the foyer. The Camellia Ball’s officers, in addition to President James, are Mr. Steven LeGrande Harvin, secretary, and Mr. Silas Calhoun McMeekin III, treasurer. The board members are Mr. James Lawrence Best, Dr. Victor Shaw Evans III, Dr. Robert Middleton Malanuk, and Mr. Michael Eugene Penland. The chairmen of the 2019 ball are Mr. and Mrs. James Lawrence Best, and the cochairmen are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Spann Laffitte Jr.
