The Symphony League of the South Carolina Philharmonic kicked off its 60th Anniversary Celebration with a luncheon at the Palmetto Club Thursday, October 2. A lunch was prepared and Dick and Winkie Goodwin, along with Matthew Jones, provided a musical program for everyone. Elizabeth Wheeler, the president of the Symphony League, welcomed everyone and announced the theme for the year: Our Legacy in Motion for 60 Years. Special events are being planned to combine celebration and fundraising events throughout the year.

The Symphony League fosters, promotes, and increases musical knowledge and appreciation of the performing arts in our community and supports the South Carolina Philharmonic. In addition, the league provides volunteer and financial support to the South Carolina Philharmonic, its youth orchestras, and music education. Also, the league provides volunteers by supporting the Arthur Fraser Competition during the University of South Carolina Southeastern Piano Festival. Throughout the years, the Symphony League has contributed $922,000 and thousands of volunteer hours to the South Carolina Philharmonic.

Symphony League members assist the Philharmonic in reaching out to school districts to encourage their participation in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute Program. This program provides a hands-on, in-school music curriculum culminating in a live, interactive performance with the South Carolina Philharmonic at the Koger Center for the Arts. Each year over 7,000 students from the Greater Midlands elementary schools have participated in this interactive program called LinkUp. Symphony League volunteers greet the students as they arrive at the Koger Center, and they provide a luncheon for the orchestra members.
