Storytime in the Gardens

The gazebo in the garden of the Hampton- Preston Mansion provides a magical setting for an ongoing partnership between Richland Library and Historic Columbia.

Storytime in the Garden is a monthly event, from April through October, where families enjoy stories and songs, followed by educational activities and historic games. These elements cohesively work together to broaden children’s understanding of our shared world and history while bringing the surrounding gardens to life.

Stories have a transformative power. They open up the world for children and offer a glimpse into different climates, cultures, and time periods.

Richland Library staff chooses books for Storytime in the Garden that reflect the very best in children’s literature. From familiar classics to new award-winners, the selections introduce and support the activities that Historic Columbia offers.

After Storytime, children can try their hand at old fashioned games, like hoop rolling, make quilt squares in historic patterns, and even plant seedlings of native plants.

At a recent Storytime in the Garden, Historic Columbia staff led children on a scavenger hunt of the gardens that engaged all five senses.

This free event, appropriate for children of all ages, began in April 2017. While undergoing renovations, Richland Library was looking for alternative spaces to offer programs and services. Historic Columbia was interested in bringing more programming to their new gazebo and surrounding gardens. As long-time partners, the two organizations immediately saw the value in combining their individual skills and resources to create this unique educational opportunity.

The next Storytime in the Garden will be held at 10 a. m., Thursday, August 1.
