St. Paws Thrift Store will present its 2nd quarter Protecting Animal Welfare (PAW) awards to five Midlands area animal rescue organizations during a ceremony Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the store located in West Columbia.

SQ Rescue, Patter Pets, Inc., Howlmore Animal Sanctuary, Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) Rescue & Rebound, and Animal Rescue Carolina (ARC) will receive $500 each to assist with their animal rescue, protection and care efforts. In addition, 1st quarter awards were presented to three other rescue groups: FIDO, Animal Protection League (APL) and Animal Rescue Carolina (ARC) in March 2013. This latest round of funds brings the total awards presented to $4,000 since the store’s opening on January 2, 2013.

Located in Triangle City (near Zesto, across from the new water fountain on 12th Street,) St. Paws opened on January 2, 2013. As a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, St. Paws was formed to serve as a portal for the sale of tax deductible merchandise donations, providing a steady source of funding for the numerous animal rescue and welfare organizations in our community.

“In a down economy, many financially strapped residents are forced to give up their pets. At the same time, monetary donations to rescue groups decline. Our goal is to fill that gap so these organizations are able to continue their rescue efforts and save as many animals as possible,” says St. Paws’ Executive Director Teresa Smith. “People may not have money to donate, but everyone has gently used items they no longer use or need. People from all walks of life are embracing the benefits of thrift shopping and donating their unwanted items. It helps the environment as well as cash strapped citizens who are looking for more value,” said Smith. “Add to that the benefit to homeless animals who want nothing more than a safe, loving home of their own, and you’ve got a truly winning combination.”
