At the December 9 meeting of the St. Luke Lutheran Church Men’s Breakfast Prayer Group, the members made holiday donations to the following organizations:
SCOA Cares Foundation—$600 to assist with its mission to provide care for cancer patients of moderate means. SCOA CARES provides financial assistance for CT and PET scans, transportation, and other necessary expenses related to the treatment for cancer for those in need. Tripp Kirkland accepted the gift on behalf of SCOA CARES.
South Carolina Lutheran Retreat Centers—$600—SCLRC, a ministry of the South Carolina Lutheran Synod, (ELCA) operates two retreat centers: Camp Kinard near Batesburg-Leesville and the Coastal Retreat Center on the Isle of Palms. Since 1972 the SCLRC has been providing holy spaces for Lutheran and other denominations and organizations to use for retreats, camps, and conferences.
Dallas Shealy accepted the gift on behalf of SCLRC.
Project Hope—$240—Richland County Sheriff’s Department’s Project Hope, an acronym for Helping our Precious Elderly. Retired Richland County officers make phone calls and visits to the elderly in need. By keeping tabs on this group, some who live alone, they can assess needs and assist with food, clothing, and other necessities as appropriate. Lt. Tom Amarro of RCSD accepted the gift on behalf of Project Hope.
Funds are raised by “love offerings” made by the men attending the weekly prayer breakfast meeting. Each year the group donates the funds collected to worthy organizations providing vital services in the Columbia area.
St. Luke Lutheran Church is located at 1127 Olympia Avenue in Columbia. Worship service is held every Sunday at 11 a.m. Visitors are always welcome. St. Luke has served the spiritual needs of the Olympia Community and greater Columbia since 1904.
