Mark Schimmoeller, a certified landscape architect, and his wife, Shirleen, are the founders of Southern Vistas, a landscape design company that has achieved highprofile large commercial and residential projects across the Southeast.

Schimmoeller and his staff have provided the design and implementation of landscape projects for the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N. C.; the Woodrow Wilson Home and Hampton Preston Mansion for the Historic Columbia Foundation in Columbia; the Botanical Gardens at Riverbanks Zoo; the Lake Carolina community in North Columbia; and, currently, the new location of the USC Darla Moore School of Business on Assembly Street.

Along with these large, commercial projects, Southern Vistas provides custom-made landscaping, irrigation, fountains, pools, and outdoor rooms and patios for homeowners. Shirleen Schimmoeller says the couple collects “architectural salvage,” including antique furniture and outside gates, exterior doors, garden pieces, fountains, and items that could be used to add a unique feature for indoor businesses, homes, or as outdoor decoration. Most of these unique pieces are available for purchase from Southern Vistas’ retail space at 2825 Commerce Avenue.

In 1986, Shimmoeller founded Southern Vistas from his home on Congaree Avenue; however, the business location has changed several times through the years. Shimmoeller says Southern Vistas was considered a “pioneer in the ( Columbia) Vista,” the first office opening in 1987 at 516 Gervais Street. In 1992, Southern Vistas moved to 600 Beltline Boulevard. In 1997, the company leased office space on Pickens Street in downtown Columbia

In 2003, Shimmoeller consolidated all of his work for Southern Vistas on Commerce Street and in 2005 built the Garden Center as a new addition to Southern Vistas.

The Southern Vistas Garden Center offers a full range of flourishing trees, shrubs, perennials, and ground covers, seeds and garden plants, herbs, fertilizer, potting soil, garden ornaments, trellises, and other decorative pieces for a home garden.

Mark and Shirleen Shimmoeller have two children, an 18 year old son and a 16 year daughter.
