South Carolina Ballet will present Motown Ballet September 19 at the Township Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. This production is a multimedia experience that brings the timeless music of Motown Records to life through the power of dance. This mixed-repertoire performance is a tribute to the music that moved a nation, blending the soulful spirit of Motown with a range of dance styles, from classical ballet to jazz, hip hop, modern, and contemporary movement. Motown Ballet breaks new ground—uniting rhythm and motion in a seamless celebration of one of the most influential musical collections in American history.
Columbia audiences can expect live music by Rod Foster & Company, under the musical direction of internationally acclaimed jazz artist Mark Rapp. This ensemble will deliver fresh, soulful arrangements of Motown’s most beloved hits—honoring legends like The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and Smokey Robinson—with every note performed live on stage.
“Motown was more than music—it was a cultural revolution,” says artistic director William Starrett. “With Motown Ballet, we’re honoring that legacy through dance, celebrating the energy, unity, and soul that defined a generation.”
