Skyhawks not immune to Cardinals’ Senior Night fever

Senior Helen Barthe had eight kills to help lead the Cardinal Newman Cardinals to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-13) victory over the Hammond Skyhawks on Senior Night at Cardinal Newman Tuesday, September 29.

Prior to the game, the Cardinals honored the four seniors on the team: Barthe, Megan Holbrook, Jasmine Hogan, and Alexa Johnson. The four have combined for 13 years in the Cardinal program with multiple all-region honors.

Once the match started, Cardinal Newman took control quickly, jumping out to a 14-6 lead. Holbrook scored three points on her serve during this run. Anissa Evans scored Hammond’s first two points on serve to make the score 14-8, but after a side out, Logan Watson ran off six straight points, including four aces, to push the lead to 21-9.

After trading side outs, Johnson then finished off the set with two service points, giving the Cardinals a 25-10 victory in the first game. Barthe had four kills in the set, while Anna Logan Gillens added five kills.

The second set started out 2-2 before Barthe served two aces in a six-point run to put the Cardinals up 8-2. The teams traded side outs until libero Christiana Greene came in to serve at 13-6. She ran off four straight points to give the Cardinals an insurmountable lead, and Cardinal Newman won the second set 25-10. Barthe, Erin Allert, and Holbrook combined for six kills in the set.

Cardinal Newman continued the domination in Game 3, as Ashlyn Watkins came in and had three blocks and two kills from the front line. Gillens scored five points on serve to help the Cardinals pull away, and Greene finished off the Skyhawks with an ace to give the Cardinals a 25-13 victory.

Gillens had 11 kills to lead the Cardinals. Watson had nine aces and 22 assists. For the Skyhawks, Evans and Meredith McLeod combined for 10 kills.
