The visiting Cardinal Newman Cardinals jumped out to an 8-4 lead against the Hammond Skyhawks Tuesday, January 20 with fast break layups from Lloyd Hemming, Malik McLane, and John Ragin, but after that, it was all Skyhawks as they went on to a 74-52 victory.

Chevez Goodwin’s put-back basket started an 11-2 run by Hammond that included an acrobatic reverse layup and a thunderous ally-oop dunk by Xavier McDaniel along with a steal and one-handed throw down from Seventh Woods to give the Skyhawks a 15-10 lead going into the second.

The lead ballooned to 22-10 after a Lucas Prickett 3-pointer, but the Cardinals fought back with four points each from Ragin and Christiaan Jones to trim the deficit to 22-18 with 4:21 remaining in the second quarter. The Skyhawks quickly regained momentum and closed the half on a 10-0 run with five points from Prickett, a bucket from Tommy Bruner, and a 3-pointer from Gressette Felder for a 36-21 lead.

The Skyhawks kept their feet on the gas building a 45-25 advantage after a Woods free throw at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter. The Cardinals whittled the lead down to 49-36 with some balanced scoring from Alex Cunningham, Jones, Ragin and Tarence Tyler, but a 3-pointer from Woods closed the quarter and put Hammond up 52-36 going into the fourth.
