This October, the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA) will join advocates and survivors nationwide to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) with the goal of deepening individual and community involvement to help end domestic violence.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that two in five, or 40 percent of people, will experience physical violence from an intimate partner during their lifetime. In FY 2024, over 19,000 survivors of domestic violence were served by SCCADVASA’s member organizations statewide.
Anyone can become a victim of domestic violence.
Most victims of domestic violence tell a friend or family member about the abuse before reporting it. This year’s “Know What to Say. Know What to Do” DVAM campaign focuses on how to respond when somebody you know shares that they are experiencing domestic violence, ways to safely provide support, and where to find resources.
“Each of us knows someone experiencing violence. If a friend or family member shared that they were being abused, would you know what to say or do?” asked Sara Barber, executive director of SCCADVASA. “This October, we encourage you to help end domestic violence for somebody you know by learning how to respond. You can also be part of the solution by donating, volunteering, and learning about policies that impact survivors.”
