Ruth Alice Setty Mock was born June 10, 1932, in Peru, Indiana and died peacefully on May 6, 2025, after 92 years of a full life. Ruth is preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Ruth Setty, son Stephen Mock, and grandson Andrew Mock.
Ruth is survived by her son, John Mock, his wife, Becky, and their daughter, Meredith. They cared for her as health issues arose and persuaded her to move to North Carolina. Life was good until more health issues sent her to the hospital and rehab centers. Also surviving are her son, Clifford, her son, James, and his wife, Rama, and her daughter, Kathryn, and her husband, Jeff Smith. Ruth was proud of her six grandchildren: Meredith Mock, Stephanie Mock, Jonathan Mock, Rachel Mock, Paul Smith and wife Isabel, and David Smith and wife Emma Phifer. She was blessed to have six great grandchildren: Chad Mock, Santiago Smith, Natalia Smith, Elliana Smith, Avanil Phifer, and Barliman Phifer.
Ruth married Richard Mock in 1953 and moved to different states as his job took them and the five children to Indiana, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida, and Mississippi.
After divorcing in 1980, Ruth settled in Columbia, S.C. and with the children leaving for college, she started another chapter of her life. She worked for AT&T as a 911 system mapper, setting up the emergency zones for South Carolina. Ruth was very active in the community theater as an actor, stage manager, and costume designer. She briefly toured with the South Carolina Ballet company as the costume manager. Over the years she traveled extensively with friends and family, sightseeing across the United States, England, Italy, Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia. In her 80s, Ruth entered backstroke swimming competitions. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing Mahjongg with a special group of friends.
Ruth requested no formal funeral but a gathering of loved ones and friends at a later date this spring. We will cherish her memory forever.
