The Richland Northeast Cavaliers shut out the Lower Richland Diamond Hornets 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, and 25-20) in volleyball action Tuesday, October 19.
“We showed we can compete and play well,” Richland Northeast head coach Gwen Wilcher said. “We’ve been doing that all season.”
The first set began with Dallas Higgins scoring to give Richland Northeast a 1-0 lead. Lower Richland responded with points from Andrea Davis and Breyonna Worrell to build a 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers then went on a 19-3 run to go up 20-7. Scoring came from Katalyna Ortiz, Zaniah Lawrence, Countess Hodges, and Dallas
Higgins.
Lower Richland battled back with points from Worrell and Trinity Williams to close the gap to 22-13. However, Richland Northeast scored three of the last four points to take the first set.
The Cavaliers raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set with points coming from Lawrence and Nia Jones. Lower Richland scored the next three, including a point from Raven Alston, to tie the score. Higgins got the tiebreaker, part of seven straight points by the Cavaliers to lead 10-3.
Lower Richland was able to whittle the deficit to 12-8, before Richland Northeast went on a 13-5 run to take the second set 25-13. Higgins, Yadeir Islais, and Lalia Mitchell scored for the Cavaliers. Williams, Cochran, and Davis scored for the Diamond Hornets.
Richland Northeast got off to a 6-1 lead in the third set with points coming from Higgins and Ortiz. Lower Richland trimmed the deficit to 7-5 with scoring from Jana Roesler- Vance. The Cavaliers took control of the set with a 13- 7 run to lead 20-12. Islais, Mitchell, and Haley Starnes scored.
Lower Richland wouldn’t go away quitely. Points from Worrell and Cochran helped cut the deficit to 22-20. That was as close as the Diamond Hornets would get as Richland Northeast scored the final three points to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
