The River Bluff Gators beat the Blythewood Bengals 2-0 in the first game of the Class 5A State Championship series at River Bluff Monday, May 22. The teams will meet for Game 2 at Blythewood on Wednesday, May 24.
Myles Proffitt went 1-for-2 for the Gators with an RBI, and Weston Grant was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Five other Gators each had a hit. Matthew Garris got the win pitching 4-2/3 innings while allowing three hits and no runs and striking out four. Andrew Vaughan pitched two innings in relief allowing just two hits and no runs while striking out three.
Blythewood got five hits from five different players. Ben Blackwell went 5-2/3 innings from the mound allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking none.
River Bluff’s two runs came in the bottom of the second inning. Consecutive singles from Grant, Wyatt McPherson, and Logan Busbee loaded the bases. Proffitt then hit an infield single to the right side that plated Grant. Garris hit into a 6-4-3 double play next, but courtesy runner Hodges McCathern scored on the play to give the Gators the 2-0 lead.
Blythewood stranded a runner in the first, second, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, and two runners in the third and fifth innings. River Bluff stranded one in the first, third, fifth, and sixth innings.
