River Bluff and Dent win mock congressional hearing





Participating students from River Bluff High School were Melissa Byars, Reese Corry, Bradilynn Crockett, Sydney Crosby, Julia Dales, Ryan Eckstrom, Graylen Grant, Merrit Jones, Lillian Lawrence, Brendan Montesinos, John Simpson, and Kimberly Vonada. The teacher coach was Linsy Dooley.

River Bluff High School and Dent Middle School won the SC Bar Law Related Education (LRE) Division’s We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution competitions on January 7 in Columbia. The wins mark River Bluff’s first state title in the high school division and Dent’s first state title in the middle school division. The first runner-up at the high school level was Wando High School.

Students competed in a mock congressional hearing and discussed critical issues regarding American government, the founding fathers and current events based on a constitutional perspective.

Participating students from Dent Middle School were Ebony Christie, Jakaiyah Franklin, Jackson Hale, Sydney Hook, Addison James, Licza Lobo, Mark Patterson, Mansi Pitalia, Kyntrea Roberts, Tag Vitale, Laura Witt, Paul Yeon, and Darwin Yoo. The teacher coach was Marc Turner.

River Bluff High School will represent S.C. in the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals April 22-26 in Washington, D.C. along with Wando High School which received a wild card spot from the Center for Civic Education.

We the People is an in-depth study of American history with an emphasis on understanding the formation of the Constitution and its interpretation throughout history. Its goal is to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s students by enhancing understanding of the institutions of American constitutional democracy and allowing students to discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Rob Williams.

The SC Bar’s LRE Division, which was developed to improve the ability of teachers to instruct law related education, has been part of the Bar since 1976. We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution is made possible through an IOLTA grant from the South Carolina Bar Foundation and additional funding from the South Carolina Bar.
