Righteous Dissent

The misuse of antisemitism accusations to stifle legitimate peace and justice activism must stop. Recently Mohsin Mahdawi, a Palestinian peace and justice advocate in student housing at Columbia University, was detained by immigration authorities with false accusations of antisemitism. Fortunately, he was released April 30, 2025. He has tirelessly collaborated with peers of diverse faiths to speak out against genocide. His arrest, predicated on the discredited IHRA definition of antisemitism, raises alarming questions about the integrity of our justice system and the protection of free speech on college campuses.

The IHRA definition of antisemitism, originally intended as a guideline, has been weaponized to target individuals based on their humanitarian beliefs. Kenneth Stern, the author of the definition, explicitly stated that it was never meant to be applied in academic settings. Despite this, it has been used to falsely accuse students of antisemitism, undermining their efforts to advocate for peace and human rights.

In stark contrast, the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (https://jerusalemdeclaration.org/) provides a more nuanced and balanced approach. Endorsed by several hundred international and American scholars, it clarifies that while antisemitism has distinct features, combating it is inseparable from the broader fight against all forms of discrimination. Inspired by seminal documents like the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the UN Resolution on Holocaust Remembrance, the Jerusalem Declaration includes specific examples distinguishing legitimate criticism of Israel and Palestine from antisemitism.

Here in South Carolina, in 2024 the IHRA definition was enshrined into law. Now Senator Tim Scott has also introduced it nationally in Congress. This political maneuvering not only stifles free speech but also detracts from the genuine fight against antisemitism by conflating it with political dissent against egregious cruelties such as the starving of an entire population.

It is imperative that we advocate against the discredited IHRA definition of antisemitism. If a definition is required, the Jerusalem Declaration is a better standard for identifying and combating antisemitism. This shift would ensure that the fight against antisemitism is conducted with integrity and respect for human rights, rather than being used as a cover for denying human rights. As citizens and activists, we must stand against the misuse of antisemitism accusations and support those who strive for peace and justice. The recent arrest of college students like Mohsin Mahdawi is a stark reminder of the need to protect the rights of individuals to speak out against oppression without fear of unjust persecution. Let us work together to uphold the principles of human goodness and justice for all.
