Richland Sertoma hosted an abbreviated 64th Annual Sportsarama at Keenan High School Friday, August 15.
A.C. Flora 27,
Eau Claire 0
The A.C. Flora Falcons and Eau Claire Shamrocks were the only teams to finish a game. Roper Wentzky threw threw touchdown passes as the Falcons defeated the Shamrocks 27-0.
“We’ve grown accustomed to Roper doing what he does,” A.C. Flora head coach Ken Floyd said. “He’s a good quarterback. It was a good outing.”
After A.C. Flora recovered the opening kick at midfield, it took Wentzky one play to find pay dirt with a short pass to Blake Betette that he took 50 yards for a touchdown. Grant Hill added the extra point, and the Falcons led 7-0.
The A.C. Flora defense came up with big plays as well, including forcing a turnover on downs on the first series.
“It was a good group,” Floyd said. “That’s an improved group. We’re excited about this football season with those guys. They had a great showing today.”
The Falcons turned to their ground game as Jerquan Williams gained ten yards on the drive’s first play. Then Wentzky found Timothy Koutrakos for a 23-yard touchdown as the Falcons extended their lead to 13-0.
A.C. Flora’s defense again came up with its own big play on the next drive. Nasir Walker pressured Eau Claire’s Josh Smith as he was throwing. Smith’s pass was intercepted by Kendall Byrd and returned to the Shamrocks’
2-yard line.
“I was in a cover two read, and I saw the quarterback break, so I broke on the out route,” Byrd said. “I should have kept going straight with all my blockers, but I cut it back and got stopped at the 2-yard line. I should have scored.”
On the next play, Wentzky threw his third touchdown pass of the game with a two-yard completion to Josh Smith. Hill’s extra point put A.C. Flora ahead 20-0.
Trayvon Gray tacked on a 15-yard touchdown run later in the game to set the final score.
A.C. Flora opens the season by hosting the Westwood Redhawks Thursday, August 21 at Memorial Stadium.
Eau Claire hosts Ridgeland Secondary Academy of Excellence Friday, August 22 at District Stadium at Keenan High School.
Whitmire 6,
Columbia 0
In a lightning shortened game, the Whitmire Wolverines defeated the Columbia Capitals 6-0.
The lone points of the game came for Whitmire following a turnover. On fourth down, Kaden Malpass threw an 18-yard touchdown strike to Landon Wulf for a 6-0 lead.
Columbia had its chances. An interception by Elyjah Roseborough haulted the Wolverines’ next offensive drive. Columbia tried to capitalize when Leray Thomas connected with Nycari Kinard for what would have been a 72-yard touchdown pass. However, it was called back due to a penalty.
The Sportsarama was called shortly after.
Columbia will take on the C.A. Johnson Green Hornets Friday, August 22 at Bolden Stadium.
