New teachers listened intently during a program in the W.J. Keenan High School auditorium presented by Richland School District One for new teachers.
W.J. Keenan High School hosted Richland One’s “New to One” event Tuesday, July 29.
“New to One” welcomes new teachers to the district and provides them with an opportunity to learn strategies.
“New teachers are the most exciting thing to me because we do believe they are super heroes,” Dr. Kuterah Farr, director of the Office of Professional Learning said. “They have the ability to transform lives. I believe that strongly. Every year we bring teachers here to Keenan and I feel like it’s a new opportunity for us to support teachers so they can transform lives.”
Super heroes is the theme for the two-day event. Prior to the hour-and-a-half program in Keenan’s auditorium, those in attendance got to listen to Keenan’s band. Then they got to hear from Dr. Eunice Williams, chief of Teaching and Learning; Dr. John Koumas, chief of Human Resources; Dr. Kevin Hasinger, executive director of Secondary Education; Dionne Sturdivant, executive director of Early Childhood and Elementary Education; and Hayward Jean, motivational speaker and director of Student Services.

“We know education can be a challenging time, especially this year, but we just decided we wanted to encourage teachers to keep pressing on,” Farr said. “We want to instill hope so people will continue on in the future.”
During the two days, teachers will also have the opportunity to meet with their new principals.
“What we wanted to do is bring a strong welcome,” Farr said. “We wanted to include our children, that’s why we had Keenan’s band involved. We try to make it relevant. For some teachers this is their first experience, so they can see the relevance of why we do what we do every day.”
