W.J. Keenan High School sophomores Bel la Green (l) and Mackenzie Glover sign their agreements to intern with Super Starr Pets. Mackenzie also will be interning with ThriveRichland.
W.J. Keenan High School sophomore Mackenzie Glover will be doing two internships this summer, one with Richland One’s ThriveRichland birth-to-five initiative and one with Super Starr Pets, a local pet supply store.
Glover is one of more than 100 Richland One career and technical education (CTE) students who will be gaining valuable work-based learning experience through internships and apprenticeships. Some students have already begun their internships or apprenticeships, while others will begin this summer.
“I’m really excited because I get to work with animals, which is a passion of mine, and to interact with children, which I also love. I’m very excited about these opportunities,”
Glover said.
The students were recognized during Richland One’s 2023 CTE Internship and Apprenticeship Signing Day program at Heyward Career and Technology Center on February 28. The signing day is part of Richland One’s One City: Future Ready partnership with the City of Columbia.

James Burks, a student in the Victory Program at Heyward Career and Technology Center, is currently interning with Walgreens.
“This celebration is a shining showcase all of our work-based learning programs have to offer,” said Dr. Charnice Starks-Ray, work-based learning consultant in Richland One’s Office of Career and Technical Education. “Students are not only getting the opportunity to build their resumes, but also build networking and employability skills.”
Through the partnership, student interns and apprentices will learn about the skills required for various career fields by working in several departments in the City of Columbia, including Parks and Recreation and Information Technology (IT). Students also have been paired with district departments, as well as with local businesses and organizations, including Fantasy Island Daycare and Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands.
“The experiences and opportunities we provide our students give them the opportunity to chart their path and go forward,” said Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon. “ These students are going to one day lead these companies and organizations.”

Keymani Wilson (r), a student in the Victory Program at Heyward Career and Technology Center, is currently interning with Starbucks.
