Quirky Crimes in the Capital City

West Columbia

Augusta Highway: A man and woman were arrested at 8 p.m. Friday after a store employee spotted them in a fast food place inside the store. The employee knew the couple had previously been trespassed from the store for shoplifting, so he alerted the manager who then called the police. When the officers arrived, they found the couple sitting in a truck in the store’s parking lot and in the middle of a meal. The officers asked them if they knew they were trespassed from the store. The man told the officers he did know he “couldn’t be in the store” but he thought “just getting takeout” from the restaurant would “be OK.” He said he “just wanted to have dinner” with his wife, but when his name was run through the computer, a warrant came back. Both people were charged with trespassing after notice and the man will be additionally held to face charges on the warrant. The truck was picked up by a friend from the parking lot.

Twelfth Street: Police were called to a home at 3 p.m. Thursday after neighbors reported a disturbance at a house. When officers arrived, a man was standing outside and waving them down. He said his roommate was furious because he was behind on the rent due to not working during the lockdown. He said his roommate was also his landlord and in the beginning, he was fine with late rent, but “he got drunk” Thursday and began destroying the man’s belongings. When the landlord approached police, the officers could smell a strong odor of alcohol and the man was slurring his words. He told them his roommate “owes two month’s rent” and he “was sick of waiting” for it. The roommate said the man had “kicked over” his motorcycle which was parked in the back yard. When officers checked the bike out, the handlebars were damaged and the gas tank was dented. The landlord admitted he had “kicked it over twice.” He was then charged with malicious injury to personal property and taken to jail without further incident.
