Oscar Daniels “Dan” Black III

 

 

Oscar Daniels “Dan” Black III of Columbia, passed away February 23, 2022, at the age of 74. He was born in Johnston, S.C. March 8, 1947, to Oscar Daniels Black Jr. and Edith Quarles Black Holmes. Dan received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and then served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Mount Whitney. After his honorable discharge, Dan received his graduate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and settled in Columbia. He made a career of communications, working in journalism and public affairs. He was the founder of what is today the Columbia Jewish News and most recently taught business communications at Midlands Technical College, the University of South Carolina, and Southern Wesleyan University. Dan was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and had a tender heart for dogs, a passion for Gamecock sports, and a love of newspapers and corny jokes.

Dan, known as GrandDan to his grandsons, is survived by his wife of 47 years, Edith Thompson Black; sons David (Dana) and Edward (Elizabeth) all of Columbia; grandsons Wilson, Hal, Reeves, and Will; sister Lisa Baker (Jim) of Ann Arbor, Mich.; mother-in-law Sara Thompson of Columbia; brother-in-law Earle Thompson (Jean) of Dallas, Texas; four nieces; and two nephews. He will also be missed by his two beloved dogs. In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his brother Kenny of Alexandria, Va.

A private funeral service was held Sunday, February 27. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to the University of South Carolina School of Journalism or paws4vets.
