Murray tabbed as new Eau Claire athletic director

Demetris Murray has been named the new athletic director at Eau Claire High School, beginning on July 1. She replaces Jamil Canada.

Murray has been at Eau Claire for 30 years, serving as the volleyball coach for 21 years and an assistant on the girls basketball team for five. She’s also been a former assistant athletic director.

“ I definitely know the culture of the school and the personalities of the school,” Murray said. “ I know the rich traditions of Eau Claire. Being here all of those years has definitely been beneficial. Coming into this new role, I already know a lot about the school.”

Eau Claire comes off an athletic year that saw its football program get into the win column for the first time in a while, the boys basketball team make it to the postseason, and the girls basketball team advance to the 2A state championship game.

“I think we are definitely on the right track with providing high quality sports opportunities here,” Murray said. “We have started laying some things in place. We are going to continue off last year’s successes and work on some of the challenges that we had last year.”

Some of those challenges include continuing to get more community support and growing the fan base. Murray said Eau Claire saw some of that growth during the girls basketball postseason run. She said that morale boost was also evident during spring sports, and she hopes it continues during the fall.

She also want to see work done to press upon the student athletes the importance of commitment.

“ We have good coaches in house,” Murray said. “We continue to look for great coaches, which we already have. We want to work on the commitment from the student athletes. We want to instill dedication in them so we can continue to go on the right track.”

Her aspirations for the athletic department don’t stop there.

“I want to see a high level of skill development in the athletes,” Murray said. “I want to promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and good character. All of those good things, while we are providing that high quality sports opportunity.”
