Miss Powers and Mr. Harmon exchange vows at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hopkins

Elizabeth Weston Powers and Mark Christopher Harmon, both of Columbia, South Carolina, were united in holy matrimony Saturday, April 6, 2013, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hopkins, South Carolina. The Reverend Canon Patricia C. Malanuk officiated the two o’clock ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Tennent Powers Jr. of Columbia. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Duffie Verner Sr., and the late Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Tennent Powers Sr., all of Columbia. She attended St. Mary’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated from the University of South Carolina where she earned a bachelor of arts in political science. The bride is the director of Government Relations at the South Carolina Hospital Association.

The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Byron Harmon of Gaffney, South Carolina. He is the grandson of Mrs. Catherine Strain Pettit, the late Mr. Jack Pettit, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jefferson Harmon Sr., all of Gaffney. The bridegroom earned a bachelor of science degree in ceramic and materials engineering from Clemson University. He is the executive director of the South Carolina Senate Republican Caucus.

The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents. Sarah Preston Powers Marzagao, sister of the bride, served as matron of honor. Sarah Tennent Marzagao and Mary Duffie Marzagao, nieces of the bride, and Elizabeth Buchanan Kelchner, goddaughter of the bride, served as flower girls. Serving as ushers were Gilbert Tennent Powers III and William Duffie Verner Powers, brothers of the bride; Joel Byron Harmon, brother of the bridegroom; and Marwan Marzagao, brotherin law of the bride. William Powers Marzagao, nephew of the bride, served as honorary ring bearer.

The father of the bridegroom, served as best man. Thomas Joel Harmon and Ryan Alexander Harmon, nephews of the bridegroom, served as crucifer and acolyte, respectively. Readings from scripture were given by William Duffie Verner III and James Weston Verner, first cousins of the bride.

Alter arrangements of hydrangeas, peonies, roses and bells of Ireland were given in loving memory of the late William Duffie Verner Jr., uncle of the bride, and the late Mrs. Alexander Archibald Dickson, Lolly, godmother of the bride.

An afternoon reception was held at the home of the bride’s sister.

The couple will reside in Columbia.
