Marie Virginia Ulmer Wolfe died January 27, 2010, at the age of 89. Born January 10, 1921, in Columbia, her life was filled with family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Oliver Jordan Wolfe, her parents, Jack Melton and Bessie Brawley Ulmer, and her sister, Judy Ulmer Nettles.
After graduating from Columbia High School she attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. Two years later she transferred to the University of South Carolina where she was a member and president of Chi Omega Sorority, graduating in 1941. She married Lt. Oliver J. Wolfe in 1943, six months before his Army Air Force deployment to the South Pacific.
Marie was a member of the Summit Club, Litchfield Country Club, Forest Lake Country Club, the Hyacinth Garden Club and, since 1948, a member of Shandon United Methodist Church. Throughout her life she was quietly involved in giving back to the Columbia community that she loved. Marie’s friends and family will remember her as a strong and gentle lady with a positive outlook on life. She always saw the best in everybody, and her joy for life was contagious.
Marie is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Dr. Betsy M. Wolfe and husband, Dr. Edmund Jacobson, of Sausalito, California; Jack W. Wolfe and wife, Kathy; Rhett O. Wolfe and wife, Kent; George B. Wolfe; Judy Wolfe Bouknight and husband, John; Susan L. Wolfe; and Dana U. Wolfe and wife, Wendi; all of Columbia. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and their spouses, Kristin Jacobson Sheehy and husband, Doug; Kimberly Jacobson and
husband, Steve Wullschleger; Katherine Wolfe;Marie Wolfe; William Wolfe; Anne Wolfe Postic and husband, Alex; Elizabeth Wolfe; Molly Wolfe and husband, Nick Grant; Barkley Wolfe; Oliver Wolfe; Taylor Wolfe; Brian Wolfe; and John Wolfe. Also surviving are
great–grandsons, Oliver,
Xander, and Jack Postic, Connor, Finn, and Maclen Sheehy and Alex Wullschleger; and brother–in–law, J. Clyde Nettles.
A memorial service was held at 3 pm Saturday, January 30, 2010, at Shandon Methodist United Church. A private burial preceded the service. Visitation was 5–7 pm Friday at the home of Dana and Wendi Wolfe, 5040 Courtney Road. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
