Local runners finish strong at SCHSL Cross Country State Championships

Blythewood’s Jacob Powell (15:25.13) took second in the boys Class 5A Division I race and Anna Kelly (18:34.44) finished third on the girls’ side to lead an impressive showing by Richland District Two athletes and other local runners at the SCHSL Cross Country State Championships held at the Aiken Steeplechase November 14-15.

Powell and Boiling Springs’s Luke Hurley ran side-by-side for much of the five-kilometer course on Saturday, but Hurley was able to pull away late winning in a time of 15:20.74. Lexington’s Josh Voegele came in third in a time of 15:43.15. Spring Valley’s Brendan Hitchcock, last year’s state champion, finished sixth in a time of 15:51.76, and his teammate, Joseph Robinson, was ninth in a time of 16:02.26.

Dutch Fork’s Evan DeMasi finished seventh in a time of 15:57.32. River Bluff’s Daniel Campbell was tenth in a time of 16:11.29, and Lexington’s Easton Henderson finished 11th in a time of 16:17.03. Dutch Fork’s Eli Johnson was 16th in a time of 16: 21.56, and Ridge View’s Correll Johnson finished 24th in a time of 16:35.78.

Five J.L. Mann runners finished in the top 23 spots, leading the Patriots to the team title with 74 points. Lexington was second with 121 points, and Spring Valley was just behind the Wildcats with 122 points. River Bluff took ninth place, and Blythewood and Dutch Fork finished tenth and 11th, respectively.

A total of 114 runners and 16 teams placed on the boys Class 5A Division I side.

As for the girls’ side, Clover’s Ella Nighbor finished first in a time of 17:37.78 to set a Class 5A meet record. Summerville’s Taylor Blackwelder was second in a time of 18:17.27, and Kelly passed Mauldin’s Callie Rohm ( 18: 35.70) and Wando’s Anna Cavallon (18:34.49) at the finish line to take third place in a time of 18: 34.44. River Bluff’s Savannah Davis was seventh in a time of 18:47.85.

With four runners in the top 18, Clover won the team title as well scoring 87 points. Wando was second with 106, and Mauldin took third with 110 points. Led by Kendra Miles ( 19: 36.55) and Elanorah Pantangan (19:37.69) in 19th and 20th place, respectively, Lexington finished fourth with 127 points. River Bluff was eighth, Blythewood finished 11th, Dutch Fork took 13th, and Ridge View was 15th.

A total of 111 runners and 16 teams placed on the girl’s side.

On Friday, Wren’s Daya Ross ran the eighth fastest time in Class 4A meet history (18:03.64) to win the girls’ individual title. She was followed by Hilton Head’s Julia McKenna (18:34.78) and Bishop England’s Nora Brahim (18:38.59).

Dreher’s Jenna Livingston was the top local racer taking eighth place in a time of 19:13.62. Gray Collegiate’s Paisley Hinkle ( 19: 39.34) and Kaylee Anderson (19:40.89) finished 14th and 15th, respectively. A.C. Flora’s Graicen Edwards was just behind them in 16th place in a time of 19:52.93.

With four runners in the top 11, Bluffton was able to win the team title with 61 points. Bishop England was second with 104, and May River took third with 115. Dreher finished in seventh place with 208 points, A.C. Flora was ninth with 225, and Gray Collegiate took 12th with 288 points.

A total of 112 runners and 16 schools placed on the girls’ side.

As for the Class 4A boys, South Pointe swept both titles. Keller Brown won the boys individual race in a time of 15:39.84, and the Stallions (73) beat out Bishop England (76) by three points to take the team title. Daniel was third with 93 points.

A.C. Flora’s. Daniel Brown finished tenth in a time of 16:29.71 leading the Falcons to eighth place in the team standings. Dreher’s Micah Roth took 24th place leading the Blue Devils to a tenth-place team finish.

Friday, November 14

Class A Girls

Dixie’s Rachel Prescott won the championship in a time of 19:55.98 leading her team to the title with 23 points.

Class A Boys

Riverwalk Academy freshman Hunter Willis won in a time of 18:00.68. Green Sea Floyds took the team title with 53 points.

Class 2A Girls

Philip Simmons’ Avah Mallek won the individual title in a time of 18:37.64 and led her Iron Horses to the team title as well with a score of 39 points.

Class 2A Boys

Liberty’s Reid Finley won in a time of 15:39.94. Philip Simmons took the team title with 37 points.

Saturday, November 15

Class 3A Girls

St. Joseph eighth grader Eva Cifuni grabbed the title in a time of 18:02.83. With five runners in the top 10, Greer Middle College took the team title netting 26 points.

Class 3A Boys

Greer Middle College (GMC) twin brothers Jackson and Beason Tuck took first and second place in times of 15:03.20 and 15:12.20, respectively, and with five runners in the top 10, GMC ran away with the team title as well scoring 26 points.

Class 5A Division II Girls

West Florence’s Susana Martinez finished first in a time of 18:20.43. Lugoff-Elgin’s Estella Blackwell was 13th in a time of 19:49.34.

Fort Mill won the team title with 38 points. Chapin finished third, Irmo was 13th, and Lugoff-Elgin was 15th.

Class 5A Division II Boys

Hillcrest’s Kadin Nance took first place in a time of 15:50.04. Chapin’s Michael Rose was sixth in a time of 16:11.96, and his teammate, Brandon Rogers, finished 11th in a time of 16:27.79.

Fort Mill took the top spot in the team standings with 48 points. Chapin was second with 85 points, Lugoff-Elgin was 11th with 278 points.
