Dreher student Darrell Clippard, age 16, and Hammond School student Cassidy Wilson, age 13, won the CC division of the 21st annual Rudolph Canzater Memorial Classic on August 6-7. Both are a part of the First Tee of Columbia program. The program teaches the fundamentals of golf, nine core values, and life skills that can be used playing the game of golf in daily life.
The Rudolph Canzater Memorial Classic is in memory of legendary Rudolph Canzater, whose passion was playing golf, coaching Pop Warner football, and mentoring young people. The golf tournament benefits the James E. Clyburn Research and Scholarship Foundation.
The foundation has donated more than two million dollars in college aid including computers, scholarships, and software to over 1,000 students. This year the foundation awarded scholarships, laptops, and software to 100 deserving students who reside or will be attending colleges and universities in the Sixth Congressional District.
The tournament had six different divisions: A, B, C, AA, BB, and CC. On August 6, Wilson and Clippard played 18-holes in a best-ball format at Foxboro Golf Club and finished with a 74 score. On August 7, they played another 18- holes at the Santee Cooper Country Club scoring a 73.
At the conclusion of the tournament, a banquet was held at the Santee Convention Center, and the award ceremony was held.
