Briana Robinson leads a young Spring Valley team to its first title in 31 years.

The Spring Valley girls basketball team had not won a state title in 31 years, so maybe it was appropriate the Lady Vikings (27- 1) beat the Orangeburg- Wilkinson Bruinettes (24- 5) by 31 points to win the girls class 4A state championship at the Colonial Life Arena Center Friday, March 6.

Sophomore guard Briana Robinson led Spring Valley with 20 points. Freshman Asia Dozier added 13 points, freshman Xylina McDaniel chipped in eight points to go with her ten rebounds, and freshman Shaquita Walker finished with six points. Sophmore Savonia Bryan got two points but hauled in a team- high 12 rebounds.

Are we sensing a theme here? These Vikings are young, but that didn’t seem to matter Friday night. While the Bruinettes depended all season on a senior laden team, it was Spring Valley that looked like the veteran squad.

The Lady Vikings jumped on the Bruinettes early and never let up. Robinson set the pace with four quick points in the first quarter, and five others scored at least one basket to put Spring Valley up 17- 8. Erica Sumpter led Orangeburg- Wilkinson with six points.

In the second quarter, the Spring Valley defense completely shut down the Bruinette attack allowing just four O- W points.

Meanwhile, McDaniel and the Vikings continued to pour it on running their lead up to 29- 12. Asia Dozier and McDaniel each had nine points by halftime. Sumpter had eight points for O- W, but only two other Bruinettes had baskets.

The third quarter presented much of the same. Again the Lady Vikings held the Bruinettes to just four points, and Robinson exploded for eleven points including a three- pointer at the end of the quarter that gave Spring Valley a 43- 16 lead.

After that, it was just a matter of running out the clock.

Still with most of the starters out of the game, the Lady Vikings’ patience and ball control resulted in more easy baskets and several free throws. They outscored O- W 10- 6 resulting in the 53- 22 final.
