Knights vanquish Cardinals

The Charlotte Christian Knights (NC) spotted the Cardinal Newman Cardinals a 25-10 lead but then charged back to win 73-55 in the Carolina Challenge Showcase at the Chick-fil-A Classic Wednesday, December 21.

Charlotte’s Kayle Mason scored a game-high 22 points, and he pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Knights. Rob Peterson finished with 17 points, and B.J. Mack and J.C. Tharrington had nine points each. Seth Bennett added seven, Blake Preston got six, and Garrett Shrader had three.

Christiaan Jones led the Cardinals with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Pirie chipped in 12, and Chico Carter Jr. added seven. Wynston Andrews had five points, and Brandon Martin finished with four points to go with seven rebounds. Patrick Reedy also had four points, Shane O’Connor got three, and Daniel Dunlap had a free throw.

After a Jones 3-pointer, Cardinal Newman led 5- 1. Peterson hit a couple of jumpers for Charlotte to tie it at 5-5, and then the Cardinals went on a 10-0 run paced by five points from Jones. The lead grew to 22-8 and 25-10 on layups from Carter Jr. and Pirie, and then Charlotte seized the momentum outscoring Cardinal Newman 17-6 to take a 32-31 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Mason led the charge with 10 points during that run. Bennett added five, and Preston hit the goahead layup. Pirie stopped the bleeding with a 3- pointer to give Cardinal Newman a 34-32 lead at the break.

Reedy hit a jumper for the Cardinals to start the second half, but after that, it was all Knights. They outscored Cardinal Newman 41-19 the final 15:25.

Peterson led the way with 11 points during that stretch. Mason had 10, Tharrington got nine, and Mason added six.

The Cardinals got points from seven different players in the second half, but none scored more than four points.
