The JOY Sunday School Class of Shandon United Methodist Church celebrated its 60th anniversary on May 21 with a “Camp Meeting Style” Diamond Jubilee Celebration. The event was a luncheon at the church. Sonny and Leanne Jarrett, Donna and Major Pearman, and Gessner Dunn and the late Bill Dunn were honored as founding members. Rev. Dr. Jimmy Adams blew the shofar to signify the beginning of the camp meeting. A picnic style lunch was served, followed by comments about the last 60 years by class president, Al Moses. Ariel Barker, a former member of the choir while she was earning her master’s in vocal performance at USC, entertained guests with “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho,” “My Tribute,” and “Amazing Grace.” Barker led the class members in singing “I’ll Fly Away,” “This Little Light of Mine,” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” JOY stands for Jesus First, Others Second, and Yourself Third. Over 100 members and guests attended and celebrated this memorable event.
