Joel P. Winchip


 

 

LTC (Ret) Joel Peter Winchip died in Columbia at the age of 87. He was born in Walworth, N.Y. in 1935 to Clair and Elizabeth (Beth) Winchip. Joel attended Fillmore Central School (1953) and Bucknell University (1957), where he played soccer for the BU Bisons and was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He graduated with a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Transportation Corps.

Joel married Carolyn Ruth Norden of Rochester, N.Y. in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany, Texas, Virginia, Korea, South Carolina, New York, and two tours in Vietnam. Joel retired as a Lieutenant Colonel following 21 years of service. After retirement from active duty, he entered civil service at Fort Jackson and retired 19 years later as the chief of transportation and maintenance.

Golf was an integral part of his life. Joel once scored a 68 at Persimmon Hill GC (’98) and recorded five holes in one in his lifetime. He served on the golf course board at the Fort Jackson Officer’s Club, Timberlake Golf Club, Mid-Carolina Golf Club, and the Senior Golfers of South Carolina.

Joel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Marcia Bacon (Robin) of Columbia; his son, Joel K. ( Tammy) of Charlotte; and his son, Chris of Columbia. His grandchildren are Linnea Bacon, Robert Joel (RJ) Bacon, Elizabeth (Libby) Winchip, and Charlotte Winchip.
