The James M. Hinton Foundation of Columbia, South Carolina is launching a Repertory Theater for youth through the inaugural hosting of an annual arts summer camp. Scheduled for June 16 through 20, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., the camp will allow students to study dance, drama, and voice/choir. The week-long day camp will culminate in a presentation of James Weldon Johnson’s God’s Trombones on Sunday, July 22 at 4 p.m.

The camp, which is free for participants, is open to students grade seven through 12 on a first- come-first-serve bases.

The Midlands Repertory Theater is an academic enrichment program designed to utilize the arts as a means of helping underprivileged youth reach their fullest potential. A developmental tool, this program addresses the issues faced by youth from economically disadvantaged families and communities, problems such as low self-esteem, lack of discipline, and lack of the skills and motivation needed to succeed.

By providing a positive alternative to “hanging out,” the program seeks to lessen the probability of its participants becoming involved with drugs, crime, violence, or teenage pregnancy.

Studies show that youth from economically disadvantaged families and communities are more prone to become teen parents, drop out of school, become juvenile delinquents, or become the victims or perpetrators of violent crimes. Studies also show these youth engage in these kinds of activities most frequently during after school hours. A Repertory Theater is a direct means of providing these at-risk students with creative and positive ways of channeling their talents and energies. The theater also can help these young men and women to individually develop in critical areas.
