Former Heathwood Hall head coach Danny Lewis stepped down Friday, January 6 to join head coach Maurice Drayton’s staff at The Citadel.

“Leaving Heathwood was an extremely tough decision,” Lewis said. “To paraphrase my favorite author and The Citadel graduate Pat Conroy, ‘It’s not that I love The Citadel more, it’s just that I’ve loved it longer.’”

Lewis said the move was unexpected. He worked with Drayton at a previous stop with The Citadel from 2001-2006 and then at S.C. State from 2008-2009.

Lewis went 28-30 in six seasons with Heathwood Hall, including two winning seasons. The high point was an 8-5 record in 2019 that included a semifinal appearance.

“I am grateful for the people that I was surrounded by,” Lewis said. “I was blessed to have had a front row seat as our assistant coaches, players, and their parents turned Heathwood Football into a consistently competitive program.”

While Lewis is proud of the success, it doesn’t stop there.

“The thing that I am most proud of is the relationships I made in the Heathwood community and our SCISA league,” Lewis said. “These are lifelong friends and personal connections that will remain with me much longer than results on a scoreboard.”

As Lewis moves on to the The Citadel, he holds his experience at Heathwood Hall in high regard.

“My time at Heathwood was a gift,” Lewis said. “ I will always be a huge fan and supporter of Heathwood Hall and our Highlanders.”
