Heathwood sweeps SCISA region meet

Heathwood Hall runners Neb Sneath and Madelyn Gomez both ran away with individual titles leading the Highlanders to a clean sweep of the SCISA Region I-3A meet at Ben Lippen October 21.

The boys took to the course first and Sneath pretty much led from start to finish taking the race in a time of 16:47.20. Hammond’s Reece Bluestein took second finishing in a time of 16:53.10.

Heathwood’s Christian Pearson (17:26.90) and Robert Golden (17:32.60) were third and fourth, respectively. They were followed by Ben Lippen’s John Davis (17:49.70) and Samari Van Horn (17:53.90). Heathwood’s Joseph French took seventh in a time of 17:58.40, and Ben Lippen’s Jackson McCrudden was next in a time of 18:18.70.

Jack Cook was the fifth Highlander to finish in the top 10 taking ninth in a time of 18:27.90. Cardinal Newman’s Alan Lacson rounded out the top 10 in a time of 18:31.40.

Heathwood took the team title with 24 points. Ben Lippen was second with 45. Cardinal Newman and Hammond both finished with 88 points, but the Cardinals won the tiebreaker by one point to take third. Augusta Christian did not field enough runners to qualify for the team standings.

Gomez dominated the girls’ side finishing in a time of 19:45.60, a little over 66 seconds faster than her teammate, Catherine Barron, who took second in a time of 20:52.10. Cardinal Newman’s Caroline Timmons was third in a time of 21:12.90. Ben Lippen grabbed the next two spots with Kate Hoover at 21:33.30 and Chloe Davis at 21:38.00. Madeline Hurst (21:51.20) and Reston Wood (21:57.00) gave the Highlanders the sixth and seventh spots, respectively. Kate Timmons (22:03.50) finished eighth for Cardinal Newman. Ben Lippen’s Riley Beyer was ninth in a time of 22:25.10, and Hammond’s Megan Joye was tenth in a time of 22:33.90.

The Highlanders took the team title with 30 points. Cardinal Newman was second with 51. Ben Lippen finished third with 62, and Hammond was fourth with 80 points. Augusta Christian did not field enough runners to qualify for the team standings.

The teams will now get ready for the state meet to be held at Heathwood Hall October 31.
