Editor’s note: Ashley Zais is the granddaughter of Tom and Clare Derham Fincher and the grand niece of Bill Fincher, all graduates of Dreher High School.

Ashley Zais, a 19–year-old senior at Wofford College, was crowned Miss South Carolina USA 2007 Saturday, Nov. 18, in Charleston, S.C.

Zais, who will graduate from Wofford in the spring with a bachelor of science degree in psychology and a minor in religion, is a professional model and has worked with Elite in Atlanta, Avenue One in Tokyo, and Millie Lewis in Columbia. A native of Fort Lewis, Wash., she is the daughter of Brig. Gen (retired) Dr. and Mrs. Mitchell M. Zais of Newberry. Dr. Zais is president of Newberry College.

One of Ashley’s hobbies is traveling. Her love of travel stems from growing up as an Army brat. Ashley has lived in the states of Washington, Georgia, Kansas, California, Washington, DC, and now South Carolina. She has also lived in several foreign countries including three years in Panama, a summer in Tokyo, and a semester abroad in Barcelona, Spain.

While living in Spain, she was able to travel to several other countries including Belgium, Denmark, France, and Italy. This past summer Ashley also took a two-week trip to Israel and spent another two weeks in Turkey and Greece. She has also traveled to Egypt and Mexico.

Following graduation from Wofford, she plans to take a mission trip to Africa and then pursue a career as a major events planner.

At Wofford, Zais has been involved in many activities, including Campus Union, Wofford Ambassadors, Women’s Choir and Singers, Campus Outreach, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, intramural soccer, and Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority. She also is on the orientation staff and was on the homecoming court. She is a recipient of the Palmetto Fellowship, the highest academic scholarship awarded in South Carolina.

As Miss South Carolina USA, Zais says she will be an ambassador for S.C. and an advocate and role model for young women. She welcomes the opportunity to speak about issues affecting young women today, such as healthy lifestyles, eating disorders, and self esteem.
