Garden Club Council of Greater Columbia installs officers




Members of the Garden Club Council of Greater Columbia installed the trustees and officers who will lead the organization in the coming year at their annual installation luncheon May 24 at their building in Maxcy Gregg Park.

Lilyan Carlson, West Sandhills district director of the Garden Club of South Carolina, conducted the installation. Two new Trustees will join those continuing their term in 2010–2011. Barbara DeVore and Betty Odiorne will serve with present trustees Marjorie Stands and Doris Kahn. The newly installed officers, who are beginning a second term of office are president, Cheryl Martino; first vice president, Olivia Watkins; second vice president, Linda Jasinski; treasurer, Betty McGregor; corresponding secretary, Jane Barnhill; and recording secretary, Sandra Jackson.

With over 650 individual members and 26 garden clubs forming its core, the council promotes the purpose and programs of the Garden Club of South Carolina. The council serves as a central agency through which joint garden club projects may be efficiently conducted on behalf of the greater Columbia community.

The council conducts monthly programs, September through May, for its members and guests, featuring speakers ranging from environmental experts to floral designers.. At the Council’s May luncheon, for example, City Councilwoman Belinda Gergel spoke to the group about her personal connection to gardening.
