Eagles overwhelm Yellow Jackets

The Airport Eagles scored four goals in the first half and two in the second to defeat the Irmo Yellow Jackets 6-nil Friday, April 21.

“I challenged them to come out and play hard in the first half,” Airport head coach Keith Morris said. “We scored two in the first five minutes. That really set the tone for the game. We were able to do some things and mix it up and play some people who haven’t gotten a lot of minutes. I was happy with the level of play.”

Airport got the offense rolling in the fourth minute. Ella Harman launched a corner kick into the Irmo box, where CeCe Gardner’s first shot attempt was blocked. She got the rebound and drilled a shot to the back of the net for a 1-nil lead.

A minute later, the Eagles lit up the scoreboard again when Brooke Davis ripped a shot to the top right corner for a 2-nil lead.

In the 15th minute, Harman launched another corner kick into the Yellow Jackets’ box where Victoria Coleman raced in and headed the ball into the net for a 3-nil lead.

Coleman collected her second goal in the 25th minute when she slipped a shot past Irmo’s Talia Delaney for a 4-nil halftime lead.

“Sometimes we’ve let a team hang around too long,” Morris said. “It was nice to put them away early and relax a little bit and work the ball around.”

Harman got into the scoring column herself in the 50th minute when she blasted a shot from outside the box past Delaney for a 5-nil lead.

Coleman and Harman teamed up once more for Airport’s final goal. In the 63rd minute, Coleman sent a pass to Harman, who then blasted a shot into the goal to set the final score.

Airport improves to 10-5-1 overall.

“We tried some things formation wise tonight,” Morris said. “We wanted to work on some things we haven’t been doing well. It was good to work on those things. We connected a few passes. I’m really happy with this and the level of play.”

Irmo falls to 6-6 overall.
