The Dutch Fork Silver Foxes scored four second half goals to earn a 4-1 come-from-behind victory over the Columbia Capitals Monday, April 28.
“I think we realized what we had to get done for the playoffs next week,” Dutch Fork head coach Todd Woodward said. “The way we played in the first half wasn’t very good. They knew they had to turn it around for the second half because what we were doing in the first half wasn’t working. In the second half we turned up the intensity, turned up the ball movement. The ball found its way to the back of the net.”
Columbia struck first in the 12th minute. Derike Mazembe collected a pass near the end line of the Dutch Fork box. He then passed it to Franck Hendju in front of the goal, who scored to give the Capitals a 1-nil lead.
“I think defensively as a whole, for the whole game, we did ok,” Woodward said. “We came out kind of sluggish. Going on a road trip, playing a 2A team, I think the high school mindset is that we can just walk onto the field and just play. We tried to prepare them and tell them they had to show up. Playoffs are coming around the corner. We have to step up the intensity.
After that we got into the groove of things. Defensively we played pretty well after that.”
Hendju’s goal held up until the second half. In the 53rd minute, Wyatt Moore drilled a free kick from outside the Captials’ box into the right lower corner of the net to tie the score 1-1.
Five minutes later, Hersh Patel sent a floater toward the Columbia goal. Max Werner jumped to head the ball into the net to give the Silver Foxes a 2-1 lead.
Dutch Fork widened its lead in the 63rd minute when Moore delivered a corner kick into the Capitals box that was deflected into the goal for a 3-1 Silver Fox lead.
“Wyatt’s impact has been tremendous all year,” Woodward said. “Throughout the season he’s been battling some injuries. When he’s on the pitch, it helps tremendously. He’s had four-goal games. He’s had a couple multi-goal games, including this one. When he’s on the pitch, it makes a huge difference. Having him healthy is the biggest issue. He went down in this game with a shoulder that he just came back from. Every time he steps on the field, he’s one of our guys who is often man marked. His impact is huge for us. He’s going to be a big-time player for us.”
Charlie Topinka put the finishing touches on the productive second half for Dutch Fork when he converted a penalty kick in the 78th minute to set the final score.
The Silver Foxes improve to 12-5 overall.
“The playoff situation this year is kind of different,” Woodward said. “They are ranking us based off RPI so every win is going to count. Columbia is a great team. They just won their region. They are 12-3. That’s going to help us RPI wise. We have Swansea tomorrow. They are region champs also. They are a good team. Then we have Spring Valley. This week is going to be huge for us if we can win out.”
Columbia falls to 12-3.
