Dreher’s Academic Decathlon Team competes at U.S. Academic Decathlon in Madison, Wisconsin

Dreher High School’s Academic Decathlon team successfully competed at the U.S. Academic Decathlon in Madison, Wisconsin, returning home with 12 medals and placing sixth in their division. The team is coached by math teachers Christina Murphy and Linda Williams and was accompanied to Madison by guidance counselor Kevin Kirkley.

The U.S. Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. Each team consists of nine students: three at the Honors level (3.750 – 4.00 GPA), three at the Scholastic level (3.00 – 3.749 GPA), and three at the Varsity level (up to 2.999 GPA). The theme for this year’s competition was World War II.

Senior Rachel Weissman (Honors) was the team’s top scorer and was named by her teammates as “MVP.” She received $250 for each of these honors.

Winning medals in this year’s competition were—Zoe Murrie (Varsity), Silver in Essay, Silver in Interview, and Bronze in Math; Gus Burgess (Varsity)— Gold in Speech and Silver in Literature; Elise Germany (Scholastic)— Gold in Literature and Silver in Interview; Isabel Cook (Honors)—Bronze in both Speech and Interview; Gracie Barrineau (Honors)— Silver in Interview; Brice Hall ( Varsity)— Bronze in Literature; and Sally Thames (Scholastic)— Bronze in Interview.
