Dreher overwhelms RNE

Dreher went on a 19- 2 run to close out the first quarter, blowing open a tie ball game and helping the Lady Blue Devils coast to a 75-28 win over the Richland Northeast Lady Cavaliers Tuesday, February 8.

“In the first quarter, we were allowing them to get the ball to the middle of the floor. They were breaking our press,” Dreher head coach Teresa Jones said. “We decided to switch it to another press, therefore Imani ( Williams) and Ayanna (Jacobs) were able to make a couple of steals, and we got the momentum. We continued to cause turnovers and get the early lead.”

Jacobs scored a game-high 32 points for Dreher. Williams chipped in 28.

“Imani Williams has been a steadfast player for us for five years,” Jones said. “We are truly going to miss her. She’s been consistent throughout the year. Ayanna Jacobs is our defensive person when we need to shut someone down. They have been the two staples of this team for this year. They’ve led us in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals. They’ve stepped up and come through with whatever I’ve asked of them.”

Arissa Griffin led Richland Northeast with 12 points. Kariyah Housey chipped in six.

Griffin got the scoring started with a free throw. Jacobs answered with a layup. Housey responded with a jumper to put the Cavaliers ahead 3-2. Jacobs knocked down a jumper to give the Lady Blue Devils the lead. A free throw by Griffin tied the score at 4-4.

Then the Dreher offense exploded, led by Jacobs who scored nine points during a 19-2 run. Williams chipped in six, and Tahlia Hollis and Annareyah Ganzy each scored two as the Lady Blue Devils led 23-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The scoring barrage continued in the second quarter. Jacobs made three layups and two jumpers, Hollis knocked down a 3- pointer, and Williams hit a jumper to extend the lead to 38-8. Then Richland Northeast had one of its best offensive runs of the night. Griffin knocked down three free throws. Housey and Ajalea Brown made 1-of-2 free throws, and Victoria Foulks made a layup to close the gap to 38-15.

The Lady Blue Devils got two buckets and a free throw from Jacobs and a jumper and two free throws from Williams to lead 47-19 at halftime.

Williams opened the third quarter with a pair of jumpers to extend the lead to 51-19. A layup from Housey cut the deficit to 51-21.

Dreher outscored Richland Northeast 10-1 the remainder of the third quarter to lead 61-22. Williams led the way with six more points. Jacobs and Brianna Robinson added two points each.

Ganzy and Williams helped the Lady Blue Devils close out the game in the fourth quarter with six points each. Jacobs hit a layup.

Gadson scored five points for the Lady Cavaliers in the final quarter, while Brown added a free throw.
