Dreher High School student Collins Coffey is spending her senior year dancing in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in Canada.
The school’s goal is to nurture the next generation of dancers and help them achieve their goals on and off stage.
Collins says a representative scouted her for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School during a ballet competition last spring. She then received a scholarship to attend the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School’s summer intensive program, where she auditioned to stay with the school for the entire year.
Collins is studying under the school’s professional division, which is aimed at artists who hope to establish a professional career as either a ballet dancer or dance instructor.
She says she hopes to join the professional Royal Winnipeg Ballet company in the future.
“ I’m incredibly grateful to be part of this ballet school. It was a lot of hard work and a lot of chance,” Collins said. “Ballet is such a competitive field, and I know that all of the ballerinas have something wonderful to give. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School just so happened to notice me and believe that I was what they were looking for. I’m so thankful that I was in the right place at the right time.”
