Dreher gets past Gray

The Dreher Blue Devils scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to overcome a 2-0 deficit and then hung on for a 6-4 win over the Gray Collegiate War Eagles Monday, April 4.

Gray Collegiate struck in the top of the first inning. Savion Smith and Landon Turner drew one out walks. Then Brent Stukes slapped a single to left field scoring Smith and giving Gray a 1-0 lead. After a walk to Blane Redmond loaded the bases, Gavin Creede flew out to center field allowing Turner to score to increase the War Eagles’ lead to 2-0.

While Gray’s offense put the War Eagles ahead, it was pitcher JT Edwards that kept them on top through three innings. The senior pitcher didn’t allow a run or hit through three innings.

Then in the fourth inning the Dreher bats came alive beginning with singles from Micah Elliott and Shane Keup. A walk by Jack Painter loaded the bases with no outs. Then Caleb Gipson singled, scoring Elliott and trimming the deficit 2-1.

Later in the inning, Sheldon Coffman reached on an error, scoring Keup and tying the game at 2-2. Two batters later, Jacob Muir drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Then Ethan Campbell reached on an error, scoring Coffman and Gipson and giving the Blue Devils a 4-2 lead. In the top of the fifth, Gray got a run back when Creede reached on an error bringing Smith home to shrink the deficit to 6-3.

Smith also scored in the sixth on a wild throw to close the gap to 6-4.

However, that was as close as Gray would get as Elliott closed out the War Eagles in the top of the seventh with two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game.
