Columbia UMC to host New Year Prayer Walk

Columbia United Methodist Church located at 1830 Main Street, will host a New Year Prayer Walk— Bring the Light.

The walk is designed to gather Christians in downtown Columbia to pray for collaboration, connection and community in the city and state. It will be held Sunday, January 4, beginning at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of the church. Participants will pray as they walk down the sidewalk of Main Street to the steps of the State House, guided by United Methodist Church volunteers.

Those who cannot walk are invited to remain in the sanctuary and participate with prayers there.

South Carolina Resident Bishop Leonard Fairley will serve as the keynote speaker and prayer leader at the State House steps. In addition to Fairley, co-pastors Revs. Ashley McCoy-Bruce and Kermit Moss from Columbia UMC, and Rev. Fran Elrod, the SC UMC Columbia District Superintendent will speak and pray.

Columbia UMC is preparing to embark on a new building project aimed at creating space downtown that the South Carolina United Methodist Church can use for collaborative mission and ministry to all. A specific goal to be good neighbors to the wide demographics of the city—unhoused, college students, commuters, other churches, businesses, and new residents. This prayer walk is open to anyone interested and will offer prayers for everyone in Columbia and the state.

All participants are encouraged to wear yellow and white to “bring the light.”

Crossing guards and other volunteers will wear yellow vests, and there will be yellow ribbons.

All are welcome and invited to participate in the prayer walk. If the weather is bad, participants will remain in the sanctuary to pray.
