(l–r) Chris Dorsey, Matt Younginer and Jimmy Dorsey will host the 93.9 FM sports show from 6 to 8 pm M–F.
Three Columbia natives are hitting the airwaves January 2 with their new sports show called “The Front Row” on WIGL Bad Dog 93.9 FM.
This Cinderella story began when Miller Communications of Orangeburg asked Chris Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, and Matt Younginer to fill in as hosts on a sports talk show covering the Clemson–Carolina football game. The four– hour show, which debuted on 93.9 FM in November, was such a success that the three sports aficionados were offered an opportunity to put their show “The Front Row” on the air in a permanent slot Monday through Friday from 6–8 pm.
“The call–in sports show will be broadcasted live each week from The Wild Hare Sports Café in Columbia’s Vista area,” explained Younginer, who began his broadcasting career in 1982. “We’re going to put more quantity and quality of sports information on the show.”
Two of “The Front Row” hosts are brothers Chris and Jimmy Dorsey. Chris Dorsey was a professional baseball pitcher for the NY Mets from 1991–94. And Jimmy Dorsey is a sports statistician who’s known as a walking sports encyclopedia.
“The Front Row” will deviate from the standard sports talk shows by encompassing breaking news in all sports, Younginer said. Sports coverage will span professional, college, high school, and other organized teams.
“‘The Front Row’ will include everything from NASCAR to PGA Golf to weightlifting,” he said. “We want to be driven by what our listeners want to hear.”
“I made it to the front row,” will be the theme of the sports show, allowing call–in guests to discuss sports–related topics on the air. “The Front Row” will regularly invite interesting personalities to talk on their show.
“We’ll interview sports figures and surprise guests as well,” Younginer added. “We’re lining up comedians, television celebrities, and movie stars to talk with us on “The Front Row.” The show will have a national flavor with focus on local high school sports as well. Beginning in January, we’re going to spotlight local athletic programs, interviewing different athletic directors each week.”
Sponsors will play a large role on the show. “During our debut show, we invited sponsors to come on the show and talk about their business on the air,” he said. “This was well-received by the community.”
